Wild Roots Project is an an initiative of D.I.G. Farm.

Wild Roots is a collective of foragers and herbalists that share their knowledge and skills in herbalism, herb cultivation, foraging for and working with wild plants. Our mission is to foster a deeper connection with nature for as many people as possible.

Mission

The mission of Wild Roots is to empower individuals from all backgrounds to foster a deeper connection with nature through group classes, immersive guided encounters, and communal volunteer opportunities. The Wild Roots collective of teachers share their knowledge and skills in herbalism and herb cultivation, foraging for and working with wild food, medicinal plants, nature crafting and related topics. They are committed to continuous learning and share a deep love for our natural environment, local ecology and community.

Initiative Leader, Foraging Teacher

Heather Flournoy

Heather, founder of Wild Nearby, is an avid foraging, wild herbalism, self-reliance, and foraging-with-horses teacher. She has her Wild Mushroom Food Safety Certification for 8 northeast states and has 25+ years experience in natural health and healing. Currently obsessed with the subtle nervine power of the lowly pineapple weed.

Herbalist and Foraging Teacher

Livia Fleming

Livia, a biotechnology and food/cosmetic science expert, grew up foraging in Slovakian forests, inspiring her passion for wild medicinal plants. She aims to connect students with community service and nature to help those in need. Currently obsessed with red clover for their color and texture and is drying them for the anytime grab. Impressed with their ability to help the assimilation of iron in the body. Keeps the nails strong and pretty and other benefits.

Shoshanna Rome

With a background of foraging wild foods and herbs in Japan, pursued her interest in alternative medicine through an intensive herbal internship in Oregon. She attends conferences and workshops across America, advocating for the incorporation of plant medicine into daily life and making herbal knowledge accessible to all.

Christian Provetto

Christian's journey from teaching music in the school system to becoming a market gardener and garden educator is a testament to his passion for education and growing. Starting with a small garden box, he and his family now run a 3000+ sqft market garden growing seasonal veggies, herbs, flowers, microgreens, and mushrooms. Chris combines his years of teaching experience with his love of gardening to inspire and educate others.

Chrys Napolitano

Chrys is a local food activist, writer and cooking instructor who has worked to raise awareness about the environment, sustainability, energy efficiency and the effects of climate change on waterfront communities. She is the founder of Two Wrasslin' Dogs Farm.

Ever wish you knew if there were edible plants and mushrooms in your own back yard?

Private Wild Walks: We'll visit your property and walk with you to help you identify wild edible and medicinal plants and fungi. Properties over 2 acres might want to add an hour per acre. Over 10 acres call to discuss the project. Hourly, 2 hour minimum.

Personalized Walk & My Wild Book: We'll visit your property with you for a foragers evaluation to get a snapshot in time of which wild foods, medicinal plants and fungi are growing on your property. We'll provide digital documentation and photos of the relevant plants that you can use to begin your foraging journey or help to plan property maintenance. Suitable for 1-6 acres in Westchester, Putnam, Orange and Fairfield counties. Contact us for larger projects.

6 month Personalized Wild Book: Over 6 months, we'll visit 5 times to document the significant wild edible and medicinal plants and fungi that emerge on your property. We'll hand you a written guide with photos, dates, and a hand drawn map that you can use to begin harvesting your own wild foods and herbs, or to help inform property maintenance decisions. Because plants and fungi emerge according to weather patterns, the more often a property is reviewed throughout the year, the more you'll find.

Price varies depending on property size. Suitable for properties 1-10 acres in Westchester, Putnam, Orange and Fairfield counties. Contact us for larger projects.
